EC Fan Fundamentals
At SANMU, our commitment to transparency and integrity goes beyond promoting our EC fans. While EC fans offer tremendous benefits in terms of energy efficiency and intelligent control, there are specific use cases where they are NOT the ideal solution.
One such case is Carpark ventilation applications. In Singapore, carparks require Class H motors for ventilation systems due to strict fire safety regulations. These motors are needed to operate under extreme conditions, such as 250°C for up to 2 hours, which is essential for ensuring that ventilation systems, like jet fans, continue to function during fire emergencies. This is critical for clearing smoke and maintaining visibility and safe evacuation routes for occupants. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) outlines specific fire safety measures for carpark ventilation systems, emphasizing that these systems must be capable of withstanding high temperatures to ensure operational integrity during a fire. This extreme environment condition (250°C for up to 2 hours) presents challenges for EC motors that cannot be overlooked:
- Permanent magnets in EC motors lose their functionality at such high temperatures, compromising performance.
- Additionally, the semiconductor electronics in EC motors, which control their functionality, cannot withstand these high temperatures for an extended period. Most electronics would fail under such extreme heat, compromising the entire fan system.
At SANMU, we believe in providing the right solution for each application, and we won’t recommend EC fans in situations where they are not suitable, such as in high-temperature carpark environments.
